Friends,

This Black History Month, we here at OMAI pay tribute to all the leaders, both famous and anonymous, who paved the way for where we're at today. And we celebrate the young artists and activists who are now blazing the path to where we need to go. Let us make the road by walking.

Hip-Hop Storytelling with El Guante & First Wave: Feb 19

Idris Goodwin

At its essence, hip-hop is the telling of stories. Like poetry and theater, hip-hop at its finest sheds light on the struggles and joys of an individual, a community, a generation. Come hear some of the Midwest's finest storytellers of this generation on one stage for a special mid-week show.

Moonshine, a Black History Celebration: February 29

Teen Poetry Slam

In Jamaica, Moonshine  is a community gathering that traditionally occurs on the full moon.   Community members would gather under the light of the moon and share in songs, dance, poetry and storytelling.  In the true study of African diasporic culture, Dance Lecturer and First Wave artistic director Chris Walker brings this ritual to UW-Madison in celebration of Black History Month.  Join us in honoring past traditions and celebrating future trends in black arts and movement.

Just Bust...a Move! featuring Motion Disorderz: March 7

Teen Poetry Slam

A new spin on a classic joint, this month's special Just Bust opens up the floor to the breakers, poppers, and all the dancers. In addition to the regular open mic, we're featuring the nationally known b-boy crew Motion Disorderz, winner of last year's Breakin the Law battle. Madison's own Crushin all Force and ViBE2 dance teams will be in the house, and there will also be graffiti art from Chicago's Lavie Raven and blank canvasses for all the visual artists to do their thing. This is one not to miss.
